Also Cool down

  • I'll try to get it back on topic ;D

Just saw that I was mentioned in this thread. I've dyno-ed my F650ST >25 times (and other F650s). Many different setups; exhaustmufflers, headers, airfilters, airbox mods, camshaft timing etc.

Anyone using a dyno knows how much readings can vary. When its a cold day, you can gain a few hp. When the bike is cold, it puts out less when compared to a warm bike.

Even opening the throttle at a lower or higher rpm can change the final number.

Point being, that number is not very usefull, unlike my name suggests.

Too cut down variables. I use an Innovate LM2 last year so that I can measure & log the A/F while driving.

    http://www.jt-performance.nl/n…-lm2-handheld-logger.html

To use it, I build new headers with a Lambda sonde adapter.

It does not tell max power, but you can see the A/F change in all rpm's between setups. It is best kept in the range of 13,5/1. In the middle of 12,5/1 (max torque) and 14,7/1 (best consumption).

One of the nicest mods for allround driveability was timing the camshafts. They had to be advanced 10&9 degrees. It changed the whole characther. It already was smooth from 2500, but now i can open the throttle fully at 2000rpm and it will deliver power without hiccups.

The f650 came in my possession 4 years ago, with 9000km. Now it is at 63000km. Compression has not changed at all, but the power output/delivery has ;)

  • Back to topic!

last week i noticed that the rubber plug on the vakuum outlet on the carb was missing.
so i made all dyno tests with a small air leak.

yes readings can vary, but if you have constant conditions, you have constant readings!

  • Wouldnt you say your target is getting the engine/carburetors to run optimal? With that target in mind, the dyno data is not very usefull, since you will be guessing what is going on inside the carburetors.

Thats why Im measuring A/F. High HP/NM figures follow automatically if the A/F is correct throughout the rpm range.

  • sure, on my own 2 stroke engines i get the right jetting by measuring AFR and mutch experiance!

If I have to setup a twostroke engine of a "client" without M18 thread, On a 2stroke engine i have the expierience to find the right jetting/needle etc without AFR.

By reading the dyno results und hear the engine, but not on a 4 stroke like my bmw.

of course it would be very interesting to know the AFR value, but till now i don t have the 18x1,5 thread on my exhaust.

    again, till now.

i think i will install a BOSCH LSU 4.9 permanent on my Bike with a gauge on the dash.

  • did you made some before/after dyno testing of your camtiming mod?

Yes, i dyno-ed before and after. But its a bad comparison for a stock engine, since i messed with cam timing a while back, where i gained 4hp by just rotating the exhaustcam 1 tooth CCW. Which equates to ~20 crank degrees. This time the adjustment was much more subtle. The camtimings are now what they should have been from the Rotax factory.

There was a little gain from 5200 to 8000 between the first and second run. And ofcourse the low-end torque + smoothness. Im going to install a #50 idle jet, because it is running a little lean (AF: 15/1) from 3000-4000, after doing the cam mod.

Currently im working on an exhaustheader, trying to influence performance by changing the lengths of the primary's before the Y junction. Ive calculated length, diameter etc. Lets hope the theory matches reality.

  • Some runs from the past years. The best HP was 51,xx hp at the rearwheel, but i have to dig up that chart.

All charts from a Dynojet dynamometer, the correction factor to calculate the hp at the crank is 14%.
